Kevin’s update - August 18, 2022

About a year ago I shared about a Deputy, Kevin Yoss, that was diagnosed with cancer and was going through the beginning stages of treatment. I also shared about the opportunity to provide financial support through benevolence fund. Thank you so much for everyone’s generous support! It has been a huge blessing to the Yoss family.

Over the past few weeks, Yoss has had some medical challenges. He has had a great sense of humor through it all and continues to trust in the Lord for everything coming his way. In Yoss fashion, he loves to give people a hard time and put people in uncomfortable situations. Today, while at a summit for law enforcement and faith groups to come together, Yoss knew that the Sheriff from Jefferson County and I would be at the event together. He kept harassing us independently to hug each other for his sake and make sure there was photo evidence of it. He just wanted to give us a hard time and get a laugh out of it. Even in the midst of a hard season of his medical treatment, he finds joy in life and helps people smile, or at least be uncomfortable….

Today, Yoss was admitted again to the hospital. Prayers would be appreciated. Prayers for strength, energy, healing from infection, comfort for Ruth and his sons, wisdom for the doctors and medical team, and continued trust in the Lord for all that is to come. Yoss is not expecting any additional donations and does not want to be a burden upon anyone during these challenging times. Prayerfully he will be back up and running soon, spending time with family, playing golf, hitting balls at the driving range, and enjoying the fullness of life. Please pray for God’s presence through it all.

Kevin’s Story

Family and Friends, Kevin Yoss, who we all know and love, needs our help. Over the past few months Kevin had been struggling with some pain in his hip and was getting tests done to figure out what was going on. Kevin has maintained a healthy lifestyle, competes in the Scottish Highland Games every year, and was training to be in the best possible condition. Thinking his hip pain was a torn cartilage from lifting weights, he was seeing an orthopedic doctor. However, as a result of one of his scans he was referred to an oncologist, something no one wants to hear. In May, 2021, Kevin was diagnosed with prostate cancer that had metastasized to his hip and pelvis.

We know Kevin as a straightforward, hardworking, caring person, who holds people accountable for their actions, who puts others above himself, and does whatever is needed to support those around him. Kevin has been married to his wonderful wife Ruth for 19 years and they have two boys, Jacob (17) and Harry (14). Ruth is a stay at home mom who homeschools the kids. The Yoss family prioritized family, health, and education over many of the conveniences that most of us take for granted. By doing so, their family is extremely close and as you can imagine this is a difficult time.

Kevin has served in law enforcement for the past 23 years, the last 21 years at the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office in Golden, Colorado. Being a veteran of the department, many deputies looked to him for guidance and wisdom on how to respond in difficult circumstance and Kevin enjoys helping new or upcoming deputies be the best they can be. Kevin has been on FMLA leave since his diagnosis and most likely will not be able to return to work.

Kevin is undergoing treatment for the cancer to help shrink the tumors and improve his quality of life. The costs associated with the medications, tests, and other related things will continue to grow and add up. Thankfully Kevin had a few weeks of paid time off saved so that will help for the near future.

Since Kevin’s diagnosis, emotions have run high for Kevin, Ruth, Jacob, Harry, the extended family, co-workers, and friends. As a private person, Kevin was slow to share the news and is now beginning to reach out to others. Kevin said, “Family, friends, and faith in Jesus is what has been sustaining us.”

So many of us want to know what we can do or how we can help. There are a few things we can do. First is prayer, asking our Heavenly Father to intercede on Kevin’s cancer and heal him. Second, we can be a friend, stay connected, and support him in whatever way that he and the family need. Third, we can support Kevin and his family financially to offset some of their medical and related expenses and relieve this piece of stress.
